Police: Iowa City man crashes BMW into house while driving drunk

IOWA CITY — An Iowa City man was arrested Sunday after police say he crashed a car into a house and fled on foot.

According to an arrest report, Iowa City police officers responded to a home in the 1300 block of Kirkwood Avenue after a 2008 BMW 528 crashed into the residence just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Police said the crash caused several thousand dollars in damage to the home.

The driver, Devon S. Morrison, 20, ran from the car after the crash, witnesses told police.

Police dogs tracked and located Morrison, who appeared to be intoxicated, with bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech and smelling of alcohol, according to the police report.

According to their investigation, police said Morrison was driving the BMW west on Lower Muscatine Road where it turns into Kirkwood Avenue when he failed to negotiate the curve, drove off the road and crashed into the house. Police said Morrison was traveling at about 35 to 40 miles per hour when the crash occurred. The speed limit in that area is 25 miles per hour.

Police said Morrison admitted to drinking and driving but could not recall how or why his vehicle left the road.

A preliminary breath test showed Morrison had a breath alcohol concentration of 0.227 percent, according to the report. The legal limit in Iowa is 0.08.

Morrison faces charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, failure to maintain control and striking fixtures upon a highway.
