Cedar Rapids firefighters battled a blaze Wednesday afternoon in the area of Ninth Street and Ninth Avenue SW.

Public Safety Spokesperson Greg Buelow said the call came in at 3:24 p.m. reporting a residential fire at 812 Ninth Ave. SW.

Witnesses told The Gazette as many as six fire trucks responded to the scene.

CRFD Battalion Chief Andrew Olesen said the fire started in the basement of a 2 ½ story wood-frame house.

Buelow said when firefighters arrived, they reported visible flames and Olesen said heavy smoke was seen coming from the second-story.

Olesen said the house is lived in, but as of 4 p.m. Wednesday it was not known if anyone was home when the fire started. Buelow said no injuries have been reported.
