Foot chase leads to arrest of juvenile with stolen handgun

CEDAR RAPIDS — A 14-year-old male was arrested Saturday after police say they found him waving a stolen handgun near a Cedar Rapids intersection.

According to a Cedar Rapids police news release, officers were dispatched to the area of 14th Street and Fifth Avenue SE just before 5 p.m. Saturday for a report of a juvenile male “waving around a gun.”

Multiple juveniles were assembled at the intersection when officers arrived. One of the juveniles, who matched the description of the individual from the report, was observed with what appeared to be a handgun in his waistband, police say.

According to the police news release, the unnamed juvenile began running away from officers as they approached and a foot pursuit ensued in the area. Officers were able to take the individual into custody as he jumped over a fence in the 500 block of 14th Street SE.

Officers located a handgun the juvenile had allegedly thrown into the tall grass around the fence, the police news release stated.

Cedar Rapids police determined the handgun was reported stolen on June 13 from a vehicle at 3140 16th Ave. SW.

According to the news release, the 14-year-old male was arrested for interference with official acts, carrying a concealed weapon and trafficking stolen weapons.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department is unable to provide additional details due to juvenile confidentiality laws.
