Drunken driving crash in eastern Johnson County sends two to hospital

IOWA CITY — A Coralville man crashed his car while driving drunk Saturday morning, sending two of his passengers to the hospital.

According to Johnson County Sheriff’s Office criminal complaints, authorities responded to a single vehicle crash at Wapsi Avenue SE and Lower West Branch Road SE around 7:04 a.m. Saturday. Deputies found a Subaru Forrester on its top in the ditch.

Authorities said 20-year-old Darius J. Irani of Coralville identified himself as the driver of the crashed car. He showed signs of intoxication, admitted to drinking several hours earlier and a breath test showed his blood alcohol content to be .125 percent.

Irani had three juveniles in the vehicle with him, deputies said. Two 16-year-old girls were taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for possible injuries, authorities said.

Irani was arrested and faces charges of second offense drunken driving and child endangerment. Both offenses are aggravated misdemeanors punishable by up to two years in prison. Irani was convicted of drunken driving in Story County in 2018, authorities said.
