CEDAR RAPIDS — One of the two people seriously injured in a crash Tuesday on First Avenue East has died.
Cedar Rapids police said Ian J. Austin, 40, of Lisbon, sustained serious injuries when the Mini Cooper he was traveling in collided with a 1994 Mack dump truck. Austin was in the vehicle’s passenger seat, officials said.
Police said Austin and the driver of the Mini Cooper, Deah S. Paulson, 44, of Iowa City, were taken to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital with serious injuries. Austin later was pronounced dead by the Linn County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Paulson remains hospitalized and is listed in serious condition, officials said.
The driver of the dump truck, David T. McNeal, 54, of Vinton, was not injured. Police said the truck was registered to Ken-Way Trucking of Walford.
Cedar Rapids police, firefighters and ambulance personnel were dispatched around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday to First Avenue and 32nd Street NE. The westbound lanes of First Avenue near the crash site were closed for several hours as authorities investigated.
Police have not released any information about how the crash occurred, stating it remains under investigation.
