Friday classes have been canceled in the Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and College Community and Linn-Mar school districts.

Districts made the call Thursday afternoon due to winter weather.

School districts throughout the Corridor have canceled school this week, though decisions typically weren’t made until the early morning hours.

The prior cancellations this week were primarily due to snowfall and poor traveling conditions.

The district announcements to cancel classes tomorrow came after the National Weather Service issued a warning today regarding the impending cold temperatures expected Friday.

The NWS’s forecast shows actual temperatures dipping below zero degrees Thursday evening, and reading a low of -14 degrees by 6 a.m. Friday before temperatures are expected to rise and reach a high of 5 degrees by 3 p.m. Friday.

When factoring in wind chills the temperature could read as low as -35 degrees and wind speeds as high as 40 miles per hour are possible until midday Friday.

In addition, Xavier Catholic and Solon Community School District announced closures.

Additional cancellations will be added as they become available.
