National group to ask Cedar Rapidians about flood preparation
Meeting at Matthew 25 is Monday
CEDAR RAPIDS — A national group interested in better understanding flood readiness is hosting a community meeting in Cedar Rapids on Monday.
Resilient America, a program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, will host the meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. at Matthew 25, 201 Third Ave. SW.
The group hopes to hear from residents of the Taylor neighborhood and the northwest quadrant.
Program officer Danielle Nagele said information shared at the meeting will help the D.C.-based group as it develops a flood response measurement framework with the Zurich Foundation, which is funded by the Zurich Insurance Group.
Resilient America held similar meetings in Cedar Rapids last year, Nagele said.
“We’re doing that all over again, the same data collection, to see what’s changed and also to get a sense of what happened during the 2016 flood — or non-flood, since you guys did such an awesome job,” she said.
Data also will be shared with local groups that have a hand in flood prevention measures, such as emergency responders, public health and environmental impacts.
“We hope that (data) will bolster their plans as they look toward the future,” Nagele said.
Resilient America is also collecting data through an online survey at bit.ly/2xVj6RB.
