ICPD finds pot in woman's home after she requests search

Report: Woman made request after Hope House escapee left her home

IOWA CITY — Police said they found marijuana inside a woman’s home after she requested police search it for drugs and weapons.

According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, on March 12, 52-year-old Gina M. Turner came to the police department and requested her home be searched for drugs and firearms. Police said Turner made the request after a Hope House escapee, who is not identified in the criminal complaint, was taken into custody after leaving her home. Turner allegedly told police that she knew the escapee had a history of using drugs and carrying weapons and she didn’t want any of that in her home.

Police said during a search of the residence, they found 85 grams of marijuana, a digital scale and paraphernalia. Turner told police the drugs belonged to her and that she had been selling pot for several months.

Turner has been arrested and faces charges of controlled substance violation and Iowa drug tax stamp violation, which are both Class D felonies and punishable by up to five years in prison.
