CEDAR RAPIDS — Former presidential hopeful and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean is endorsing Andy McGuire — “a proud, passionate progressive with a record of getting things done” — for the party’s gubernatorial nomination.

“With all the special interests running amok in the Iowa Statehouse and the hateful and divisive policies coming out of the Trump White House we’ve got the chance to elect a strong progressive governor in Iowa,” Dean said in a 30-second endorsement video released Monday by McGuire’s campaign.

McGuire is among seven Iowa Democrats seeking the party’s nomination to run in 2018. She is the former chairwoman of the Iowa Democratic Party and has long been involved in the party and state politics.

Dean, a former Vermont governor, noted that like him, McGuire is a physician, so “she can fix the broken health care system and finally put people first instead of special interests.”

“She has worked directly with patients who have had to postpone treatment due to lack of health insurance and seen the heartbreak of families of workers injured on the job,” Dean said. “She knows these are not just political talking points. They are life changing issues, and she knows how to fix them.”

McGuire has the passion, experience and character required to lead, Dean said, “and I believe she is the best candidate to defeat the Republicans.”

“She believes in people over profits and is committed to ensuring all Iowans get a fair shake,” said Dean, who finished third in the 2004 Iowa first-in-the-nation precinct caucuses.
