CEDAR RAPIDS — State Sen. Liz Mathis, D-Hiawatha, has been selected to the Women in Government Leadership Program class of 2019.

The program describes those selected as “problem-solvers making a difference in the communities they serve and blazing a trail for future women candidates to follow.”

The program invites elected women to be featured in Governing magazine, attend leadership programs to learn job critical skills and pay it forward by mentoring the next generation of women leaders to run for office. The 100 alumnae of the program are recruiting women candidates to run and creating initiatives to empower potential officeholders and women already serving in government.

Mathis first was elected to the Iowa Senate in 2011. She is the ranking Democrat on the Human Resources Committee and on the Administration and Regulation Budget Subcommittee. She also serves on the Appropriations and Commerce committees.

A former news reporter and anchor for Eastern Iowa television stations, Mathis now works for Four Oaks, a child welfare and behavioral health agency.
