What are the most important issues you think need to be addressed if you are elected?
Iowa and the country are in a retirement savings crisis. The first step at fixing this problem is to educate people about the importance of saving for retirement, then giving them some tools to help. I have been working for three years to get legislation to help all Iowans gain access to a retirement plan through the workplace if their employer does not provide one. Additionally, we are facing a student loan crisis. I will continue to educate Iowa families on the value of saving early for college as opposed to borrowing later.
Tell voters why you are running for this position. What makes you most qualified?
I have served Iowans as their state treasurer since 1983. My role as state treasurer is to serve as the state’s banker. In that role, I have worked to ensure that Iowa gained and maintains its AAA credit rating. I understand the importance of having our fiscal house in order. Since I took office, I have introduced programs such as the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, College Savings Iowa and IAble. I understand the role of the state treasurer and I will continue to work for Iowans in this role.
What should voters know about you before going to the polls?
My work is not done. I want to continue to use technology to increase the amount of money we return to Iowans through the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. I want to educate every Iowa about the importance of saving for college and how it can combat our student loan debt crisis. And finally, I want bring light to the retirement savings crisis and work with Iowans to find solutions. I will continue to be a leader and spokesperson for making the right fiscal decisions for Iowa.
