What are the three most important issues facing Iowans, and how would you address them?

• Health care is the number one thing that I hear about when talking to people. People realize they are one serious diagnosis away from bankruptcy.

• The Medicaid privatization disaster is the second thing I hear about most. It needs to be brought back under state control at least until a solution can be found.

• Unions are the third thing I hear about most. We need to bring back their rights to bargain for things such as vacation and health care.

Do you believe the state should increase the minimum wage? If yes, to what level?

Yes, I believe the minimum wage should be increased to $15. It’s pathetic that citizens of Iowa cannot afford a two-bedroom apartment for their family if they make less than $15 per hour.

Would you vote to roll back the state income tax cuts passed last session? Would you expand them?

I would roll them back until we get the tax situation balanced in Iowa. We should not be cutting funding to necessary services like mental health and public safety. We also should not be giving away millions of dollars in corporate tax giveaways.

Would you vote to end or phase out the property tax “backfill” for local governments?

I would not vote to phase it out at this time. Promises were made to cities in Iowa that these payments would be kept intact.

Would you vote to ban automated traffic cameras/enforcement devices? If no, would you favor bringing them under state regulation?

Yes, I would vote to ban them. I feel they are a useful tool for slowing traffic down, however, cities also profit from the revenue generated from them.

Would you vote to expand Iowa’s current medical cannabis law? Legalize marijuana?

Yes, I would vote to expand Iowa’s current medical cannabis law. Many studies have been done that prove that medical cannabis can be beneficial to a number of serious illnesses. Iowa only allows a few now. Yes, I would vote to legalize marijuana.

Should Iowa amend the state Constitution to protect the right to bear arms beyond current language? Would you support a “constitutional carry” change to Iowa’s firearm permit system that would significantly expand gun rights?

I think a change to the Iowa Constitution should be brought to voters. I would not support a constitutional carry change to Iowa’s firearm permit system.

Would you support giving counties local control to regulate livestock facilities? Would you favor a moratorium on new large CAFO construction?

I would not support giving counties local control. I feel that inspections should be fair for everyone. I would favor a moratorium on new CAFO construction. I feel that more studies need to be completed on what livestock facilities and hog confinement houses are doing to water quality in Iowa.

What are your thoughts on increasing funding for public education? Would you vote to extend 1-cent SAVE sales tax for school infrastructure until 2049?

I think funding needs to be increased for funding public education. One percent is not enough to sustain quality education in Iowa. Teachers should not have to provide their supplies for students. I would vote to extend the 1-cent SAVE sales tax until 2049.

Would you expand or repeal Iowa’s law barring doctors from performing an abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected?

I would repeal it. I feel a woman should be able to determine what happens with her own body.
