CEDAR RAPIDS — City Council members in Cedar Rapids and Solon are endorsing Iowa City native Zach Wahls, a Democrat, in his run to fill the Senate District 37 seat being vacated by Bob Dvorsky, the officials announced in a statement on Monday.
Dvorsky, a Democrat from Coralville, will be retiring.
Ashley Vanorny, who won a runoff election against incumbent Justin Shields to take the District 5 seat in Cedar Rapids last year, and Lauren Whitehead, who also was elected to the Solon City Council in 2017, have been supporters of Wahls since early on when he announced his candidacy, they said.
Whitehead touted his “fresh energy, leadership and ideas to propel our state forward.”
“As a young public servant in a small community, I understand fully the need for a new generation of leadership to rise as other generations move on or retire,” she said in a prepared statement.
Vanorny, who does not live in the district but has long-standing family ties to the area, said Wahls has “inspired my own advocacy and activism.”
Wahls became a well-known advocate for same-sex marriage after his testimony before the Iowa Legislature about his two moms went viral in 2011.
