IOWA CITY — The City Park train ride can be yours to take home, if you have at least $20,000.

The historic City Park amusement rides — including the ferris wheel, whale ride, airplane ride and carousel — are now listed on a government bidding website, Earlier this year, the city announced it would sell the rides because it was “no longer viable” because of their age and cost to maintain them.

Iowa City plans to replace the rides, which date back to 1952, with an adventure playground. The Gazette previously reported that construction is scheduled to begin late spring or early summer.

The new playground will likely be the city’s largest and most expensive. The project has a $650,000 budget.

In comparison, Mercer Park playground, which opened a few years ago, came with a price tag of $225,000.

The opening bid for the train ride is the most expensive, with the carousel following at $10,000. The remaining rides each have as starting bid of $1,000. Bidding is open through Oct. 19.

The city offered free rides on weekends through from August through Sunday. They’re open from 1 to 6 p.m., with the final day scheduled for Sunday.

If amusement rides aren’t in your budget, you can still own a piece of Iowa City. Also up for bid on are a number of painted outdoor benches, with bids starting at $10. The benches were on the Pedestrian Mall as part of the Benchmarks project. The Downtown District is replacing some of the older benches painted as part of the project.
