IOWA CITY — RAGBRAI riders this year will spend their final night of camping in Iowa City — the first time in 42 years the bike ride has stayed overnight in the city.
The city announced the route that riders will take through town during their July 27-28 visit. Riders will come into the city on Sand Road/Gilbert Street and then take the following route:
l S. Gilbert Street north to Market Street
l Market Street west to Madison Street
l Madison Street south to Iowa Avenue
l Iowa Avenue west to Riverside Drive
l Riverside Drive north to Park Road, and the main entrance to City Park
The City Park campground will include amenities such as a bike repair station, food trucks and downtown shuttle stops.
The city expects Park Road to be opened by the time of the event. Registered RAGBRAI support vehicles were asked to approach Iowa City from Interstate 80, and travel south on Dubuque Street to City Park. RVs and buses will park in the University of Iowa’s Hancher Auditorium lot, near City Park. A supplemental RV space will be in Napoleon Park, 2501 S. Gilbert St., on the south side of Iowa City.
Entertainment for the night will be similar to last year’s Downtown Block Party, despite Pedestrian Mall construction. The main concert stage will be on Clinton Street, facing south, near the Pentacrest. Blitzen Trapper and the Jayhawks headline the musical lineup.
