CEDAR RAPIDS — Registration for the 2018 Especially For You Race Against Breast Cancer is now open.
Mercy Medical Center’s annual 5-kilometer walk and run, a breast cancer prevention and treatment fundraiser, will take place this year on Sunday, Oct. 7.
Individuals and teams who wish to participate can now register on the website, www.especiallyforyourace.org.
Team registration is only open through Sept. 7.
People may register individually until 7:30 a.m. on race day.
The Especially For You event — which starts at 8 a.m. outside the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, 701 10th St. SE. — will host a 5K run, a 5K walk and a “family fun walk” covering a route similar to last year’s race.
Live music, children’s activities and a pancake breakfast will take place at the finish line in the NewBo district.
Organizers expect more than 15,000 registrations for this year’s race, according to a Thursday news release on the event.
The public is also invited to vote on this year’s T-shirt color — either green, coral or yellow — on the website as well as on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Voting ends April 30.

The Especially For You race was founded by Mercy and General Mills in honor of Sandy Knight, a General Mills employee who died of breast cancer in 1991.
“Her dream was to establish a race to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and education,” the news release stated.
Last year’s race, which drew about 14,700 participants, raised more than $481,000 to cover the cost of mammograms as well as other breast care and gynecological services for individuals who cannot afford it.
The Especially For You Fund has helped more than 5,500 people, according to the news release. The fund now covers breast, ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancer services at participating local medical providers.
