West Side Transport, a Cedar Rapids-based transportation and logistics company, plans an $8 million expansion for a corporate headquarters in Cedar Rapids.
The 50-year company announced plans for a new 50,000-square-foot building with office space and a maintenance shop on Sixth Street SW, just north of Tharp Road, east of Eastern Iowa Airport, the company said in a news release Wednesday.
West Side Transport currently has a 35,000-square-foot facility at 4201 16th Avenue SW and operates terminals in five other Midwestern states.
Under the project, about 3,000 feet in turning lanes will be built from Highway 965 to West Side Transport using an $825,000 RISE grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Cedar Rapids City Council on Tuesday also approved $1,050,098 in funding — through tax increment funds generated by area projects — for the additional lanes.
The lanes are in anticipation of an increased number of vehicles traveling to the new West Side Transport location.
Construction on the project is slated to begin in June and wrap up around May 2020.
“We’re pleased to have the opportunity to expand our headquarter footprint here in Cedar Rapids as we update our currently dated facility and work to grow our business opportunities,” said Don Vogt, owner and chief executive officer of West Side Transport, in the release.
