Uber Inc. launched its Uber Eats service in Cedar Rapids Tuesday, hoping to leverage its existing customer base in the area to compete against other food delivery companies already in the city.

Uber, the world’s most-used ride-hailing company, started the delivery service in 2014 and launched in Des Moines in March of this year.

Spokeswoman Charity Jackson said the company chose Cedar Rapids because of “robust” ridership in the area. She declined to say how many ride-shares it provides in the city.

Uber debuted its ride-hailing in Cedar Rapids in 2014.

Uber enters the Cedar Rapids market about two months after Bite Squad, a Minneapolis-based restaurant delivery service, started operations in the city. Food delivery companies GrubHub and MyTown2Go also have partnerships with local restaurants for delivery.

Uber’s delivery fees start at $3.99 and rise depending on how busy the restaurant is, weather conditions and how far the customer is from the restaurant.

The Cedar Rapids delivery range stretches north to the southern border of Fay M. Clark Memorial Park in Hiawatha, and parts of Marion west of 22nd Street.

Uber Eats launched in Iowa City earlier this July.

Residents can use Uber Eats by downloading the app from Apple’s App Store or Android’s Play Store on their devices.
