CEDAR RAPIDS — Starting next week, Stamats Communications Inc. will have a new chief executive officer for the first time since 1995.
Peter S. Stamats, a grandson of the company’s founder, will take over as CEO July 1, the higher education marketing company announced Wednesday.
He will replace current CEO and Executive Chairman Guy Wendler, who is retiring.
Stamats joined the company in 1988 and previously worked as its chief financial officer and chief operating officer. He lives in San Francisco, but commutes regularly to Cedar Rapids and the company’s office in Minneapolis, according to a news release.
In an interview, Wendler said there are no plans to move Stamats Communications’ headquarters out of Cedar Rapids.
“We just renewed our lease to stay here in our current building for five years. That’s kind of an indication of (our) commitment here. If there’s any community concern about Stamats leaving, that’s not the plan,” he said.
Stamats Communications has about 125 employees, with about 75 working in Cedar Rapids, Wendler said.
Wendler has served as Stamats Communications’ president and CEO since 1995, and became executive chairman in February. In an interview, Wendler said he made the decision to retire at the end of last year
“Everyone here has had advance notice of my plans,” Wendler said.
Stamats’ brother, Bill Stamats, now serves as the company’s executive vice president and leads its higher education research and marketing division. He is based in Cedar Rapids.
