MARION — Jerry Brown has seen a lot of change in the audiovisual industry over the past 20 years.

That’s when he started Blue Sky Productions while living in Minnesota, a business that today provides audio engineering, audio and video production, event production, equipment rental and studio space rental.

“This industry is always changing and I think we navigate those waters pretty well,” said Brown, walking around the Blue Sky Productions studio space in Marion, near Squaw Creek Park.

The studio just underwent renovations to enhance the look and functionality of the space, with upgrades made to hardware and equipment.

“It’s the latest and greatest. We’ve installed top-of-the-line audio equipment and software in our recording studio,” he said.

Brown said the previous equipment required about 20 minutes of time to warm up. Now he or his staff step into the studio, hit a button or two and they are ready to go.

The isolation booth is where much recording both instrumental and voice-over work is done.

“We wanted to give the booth more personality,” he said, noting that they did research before creating the own wall and ceiling panels that also include LED strip lighting that can be changed to reflect the mood of the recording.

“Our lighting can be adjusted to meet the comfort level of someone who rents the space. It can be personalized to meet the feel of the client.”

Beyond the isolation booth and control room, there is space both for Brown and his team to work — via modular, portable workstations — and groups renting the studio to spread out.

“We’ve recorded bands by spreading them out throughout the studio,” he said. “We’ll put the guitarist out here, the drummer and the bass player in the control booth and the keyboardist and lead singer in the (isolation) booth.”

The studio also has a deck off the back, creating outdoor space for relaxing, having a jam session or grilling. Brown hopes that bands, musical groups and church choirs will come out and rent the space for recording or just hosting community building activities.

He’s considering putting together a regular jazz jam session, as well.

“It’s really what we have this whole space for. It’s a creative, collaborative space,” he said.

Blue Sky Productions also handles event-production work. They provide expertise on-site as well as equipment rental for hotels, meeting and events. They also provide promotional and commercial work for other companies.
