CEDAR RAPIDS — Another tenant has left Lindale Mall after restaurant Beck’s Taproom Grill shut its doors Monday.
“It really was just as simple as there wasn’t enough traffic. The numbers just weren’t there,” said Darin Beck, owner of Cedar Falls-based Barmuda Cos., which operates Beck’s Taproom.
Beck’s Taproom had occupied 5,090 square feet of space at Lindale, a mall spokeswoman said. Barmuda had previously operated a Hurricane Grill and Wings in the spot, along with two others in Iowa, but rebranded all of those locations to Beck’s Taproom. The one at Lindale changed in July 2017.
“Our leasing team will work with potential new tenants to replace Beck’s Taproom and we will announce plans when we are able,” Lindale Marketing Director Lia Pontarelli said in an email.
Beck also said road construction along Collins Road NE played into the closure.
“We just noticed almost overnight when they started working on the road that business dropped off and it just got progressively worse over two to three months,” he said.
About 30 employees worked at the Lindale Mall location.
For now, Beck said Barmuda does not have any plans to open a new restaurant in Cedar Rapids. The company operates two Beck’s Taproom locations in Cedar Falls and Waterloo, among other bar concepts.
Lindale already is facing large vacancies as former anchors Sears and Younkers close down. The Sears store at Lindale shuttered its doors this past weekend while Younkers still is holding closing sales after its parent company went into bankruptcy.
