Duane Johnson spent years serving in law enforcement, both for the Marion Police Department and in Florida in the sheriff’s department. During that time he learned kickboxing and self-defense tactics.
For years, he dreamed of opening his own gym where he’d share the skills he learned. Now, as owner of There’s No Quit! Kickboxing, in Uptown Marion, he’s doing just that.
Kickboxing classes are offered throughout the day starting at 5:30 a.m. and running until 7:30 at night.
“So this fits any schedule,” Johnson said, noting that members don’t have to sign up for a certain class in advance. “It’s $49 a month for unlimited kickboxing classes.”
Drop-ins also can take classes, too.
Johnson hosts monthly self-defense classes at the studio, as well as private self-defense classes and active shooter trainings at local businesses.
“Being in law enforcement and seeing and spending time with victims, you have a heart for them and you wish you could have been there for them,” he said. “This is a way that I can be there for them.”
Now is a good time to join the studio, Johnson said, as many people resolve to exercise more in the New Year.

“Of course, we want to help those individuals who have decided they want to make a change,” he said. “But the one thing I want people to realize is that we are not a New Year’s resolution. This is a lifetime solution.
“We like to say that our studio members are learning kickboxing and the cardio aspect and the weight loss are by products of what you are learning here.”
He added that, “There’s a passion here ... .
“We aren’t a big corporation or franchise. We have something that we want the community to have and that we want to share with the community. That is what makes small businesses so much fun. We want to include the community in this.”
