CEDAR RAPIDS — If you’re planning to head out tonight to the first ever Halloween Parade in Cedar Rapids, you may want to bundle up in more than just a costume.
The National Weather Service is predicting a 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 4 p.m. with a high near 39 degrees and winds out of the west at 15 to 20 mph.
But Peter Durin, the parade’s main organizer, isn’t letting the forecast scare him.
“It’s not bad. Even with the wind, it’s tolerable. We’re going to be fine,” he said. “The energy right now, even if the weather isn’t nice, we’re going full speed ahead.”
The parade is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and steps off from the corner of Third Street SE and Ninth Avenue SE.
The route continues down Third Street to 16th Avenue and then turns right and crosses the Bridge of Lions into Czech Village. The parade ends at C Street SW.
Durin said the parade, with a theme of “Monsters of the Night,” features 72 entries.
“We’ve got a lot of neat stuff people are going to be giving away,” Durin said. “Come out for a few hours and you’ll have a ball.”
Parade participants are allowed to hand out, but not throw, candy.
An awards ceremony takes place at 8:45 p.m. at NewBo City Market, 1100 Third St. SE. Awards will be given for “Most Scary,” “Most Creative,” “Kids’ Choice,” “Best Float” and “Best Walking Entry.”
Several other Halloween-related events also are planned tonight, including:
— Face painting from 6 to 8 p.m. in the former NewBo Alehouse building at 1201 Third St. SE.
— Free screening of “Hocus Pocus” at 6 p.m. at NewBo City Market.

The fun continues Saturday with trick-or-treating from 10 a.m. to noon in Czech Village and the first ever Zombie Run beginning at noon at Hawkeye Downs, 4400 Sixth St. SW, Cedar Rapids. Durin said earlier this week he hopes the parade brings the community together.
“I want this to be not only a parade for the people, but I want all the spectators to come and dress up. I want this to be the biggest costume event ever,” he said Monday. “At the end of the parade, I’m going to be the last guy. I’m going to say, ‘C’mon’ and have all the kids join in with their parents and walk the streets.”
The parade is being organized by Terry-Durin Co., an electrical and telecommunications supply company based in Cedar Rapids, and hosted by Czech Village New Bohemia Main Street District.
