CEDAR RAPIDS - Next stop, Alaska.
Always searching for the next adventure, the Weglarz family of Cedar Rapids is planning its next hiking trip. John, Cindy and their children, Karl and Kate, hike together in many different locations around the United States and beyond.
'Hiking has given us so many enjoyable memories over the years,” Cindy Weglarz said.
The family usually hikes in places with many different trails, for around 35 days. The trails vary in difficulty.
One of their most memorable trips, so far, was to New Zealand, which included hiking the Milford Trek. The Milford Trek goes through a rain forest, mountain passes and by huge waterfalls.
Another hike was Angel's Landing in Utah. That trail has huge drops with only a narrow ledge and a chain bolted to the cliff side to keep someone from falling.
'Cindy stopped near the end because it was too scary to continue,” John Weglarz said.
Though some trails can be dangerous, the Weglarz family enjoys the exercise and the challenge of hiking in new and difficult places. They would advise beginning hikers to take some time to prepare and put in some miles before going on a major hiking trip.
They also suggest wearing in hiking boots before going and to start out slow and build up to longer distances and higher elevation hikes.
The family's next stop trip is to Alaska, sometime in 2018. They plan for some full day hikes in national parks. They also plan to drive along the Alaskan highway, see glaciers and take ferry trips.
