CEDAR RAPIDS — Whether it’s his competition around the state, or his potential place in state history, Miles Thompson isn’t too concerned.
For now, he's just a sophomore, learning the ropes in his first season on the varsity team at Cedar Rapids Washington.
Besides, tunnel vision isn’t all bad.

“I just focus on me,” he said. “Right now, I’m just focusing on the next race.”
Well, Miles, here’s the scoop. At the moment, you’re down as the 2021 state leader in the 100-meter dash.
After a good amount of debate, race officials settled on a 10.82-second effort for Thompson at Tuesday’s Hawkins Relays at John Wall Field. That boosted him from 102nd in the state this season all the way to No. 1.
“I didn’t think I was going to have a day like this,” he said. “I had a hamstring injury early in the season. Since I got healthy, I’ve been running a lot faster.
“My start could have been a lot better, but I just told myself, ’Forget it. Just focus on the rest of the race.’”
Thompson originally was credited with a time of 10.48 seconds, which would have been an all-time Iowa best. But the hand-timed number was eventually converted to an automated time.
Still, that’s fast. And just to prove it wasn’t a fluke, Thompson followed with a winning 22.89-second mark in the 200.
Host Cedar Rapids Prairie was the class of the team race, winning nine events and compiling 182 points. Linn-Mar was second with 142.
The Hawks’ big highlight came in the shuttle hurdle relay, in which Adam Longwell, Geramie Hardaway, Eli Ebel and Ceondae Adams won in 59.22 seconds, which ranks second in the state to Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
“It was a little messy,” Adams said. “We’ve still got some work to do. Once we clean things up, we’ll be pushing Kennedy.
“I hit the sixth hurdle and the ninth hurdle. We’ve just got to clean things up. It’s not just me; it’s all of us.”
The shuttle win was one of five for Prairie in the relays.
Marion’s Garret Wagner won the shot put with a heave of 54 feet, 8 inches, leading the field by about 8 feet.
“I was using the whole ring. Everything was coming off smooth,” said Wagner, whose season-best toss of 55-7 3/4 ranks second in the state.
The Drake Relays are next week.
“I’m excited,” Wagner said. “I’m going to prove a point that I’m a pretty decent thrower.”
