LA JOLLA, Calif. — Carson Schaake played his first-ever round in a U.S. Open on Thursday and darkness kept him from finishing.
The 26-year-old former Hawkeye golfer stands at 5-over par and tied for 110th place out of the field of 156. He’s through 13 holes and will have to return Friday morning at dawn to complete his round.
His front nine was derailed by a triple-bogey 7 on the par-4 seventh hole. He missed the fairway, of course, but there’s a silver lining. Rocco Mediate missed that fairway in every practice round and competitive round at Torrey in 2008 and still played well enough to push Tiger Woods to a Monday playoff.
Schaake’s got a long way to go for that, but as the cut line starts to look at potentially in the 3- to 4-over range, he will have his work cut out for him in the second round Friday to continue playing into the weekend.
He’ll get his chance on the 14th at 4:50 p.m. (CT) Friday. Then play another 18 holes after that.
