Mount Vernon-Lisbon positions itself nicely
May. 15, 2009 3:59 pm
MARION -- They didn't win this meet. But the girls from Mount Vernon-Lisbon put themselves in a position to win the next one.The one that matters.Mount Vernon-Lisbon won nine events, but Dubuque Wahlert parlayed overall strength into a championship at Friday's Class 3A girls' track regional at Thomas Park Field."We set up some good relays, some good events for state," said MV-L junior Karly Cochrane, who had a hand -- well, leg -- in four titles, including a dramatic comeback in the 1,600-meter relay. "I'm happy with the way things went."Wahlert outscored Mount Vernon-Lisbon by a 175-154 margin. Mount Vernon-Lisbon is guaranteed 13 state entrants and likely will have more once the at-large pool is established.Cochrane and Alex Wilson are at the forefront of it all. Cochrane won the 400 and anchored the winning 3,200-meter, sprint medley and 1,600-meter relays. Wilson was the champion in the 800 and 1,500 anchored the distance medley to victory with a 2:16.7 split, and handed off to Cochrane in the final event. Both ran four events. Both won four."I'm used to running four events," Cochrane said. "The rest time wasn't great tonight, but everybody's used to it."Marion's Kelsey Labs was a triple-winner, sweeping the individual hurdles events and winning the 100 meters, an event at which she is relatively new."It's kind of funny," she said. "I've never considered myself a 100 runner. But the second time I ran it, I won. I've worked on my starts out of the blocks."Labs was unnerved when a rival false-started in the 400 hurdles. She restarted, and won by nearly a second in 1:05.77."That happened at state when I was a sophomore, and I just lost it," she said. "I've worked on my focus, and I'm not going to let it bother me again."Wahlert won by finishing in the top four in every event. The boys' race was an exercise in domination. DeWitt Central won nine events, earned 20 state entrants and ran away with the team race. The Sabers scored 210 points. Marion was second with 91. The Indians have nine state entrants, led by shot put winner Drew Clark. Clark, the Drake Relays champion, heaved it 62 feet, 5 inches."This is probably the most consistent I've been," said Clark, who will play football at the University of Iowa in the fall. "I was able to throw the discus first today (he finished second), and that's the way I like it. I like to be fresh in the discus, because it's more technique for me. Then the shot is power."Marion also won the shuttle hurdle relay. The top three boys qualify in each event. For girls, the top two are guaranteed a bid, plus at-large berths to be determined after all the regionals are completed Saturday. The state meet is next Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. As per Iowa High School Athletic Association rules, a coin flip was necessary to determine the final qualifier in the boys' 100-meter dash. Three boys -- Dalton Schindler and Nate Livingston of Marion and Central's Ryan Daniels -- were clocked in 11.53 seconds. Livingston was eliminated from the tie based on a pick at the finish line, leaving Schindler and Daniels, who raced in different heats.Coaches were summoned to the pressbox for the flip, which Schindler won.The beginning of the meet was delayed 30 minutes by lightning, and the competition was held through intermittent showers.
