ST. ANNES, England - Nearing the end of the first round of play at Royal Lythum & St. Annes, 39 players are currently below par in the Open Championship. Only one player scored better than Zach Johnson, though.
Johnson's 5-under 65 - which included seven birdies in a stretch of 13 holes - puts the Cedar Rapids native in second place as play was winding down Thursday.
Just how good was Johnson's Thursday round? It took a course record to beat him.

Adam Scott's 64 tied the course record, and the Australian leads at 6-under par.
Tiger Woods started his Championship off by firing a 3-under 67. Former Open Champion Ernie Els is also 3-under, and defending champion Darren Clarke shot 6-over 76.
Johnson will start at 2:10 p.m. England time on Friday.
