Quarterback C.J. Beathard is OK. He suffered a bruised shoulder - throwing shoulder, BTW - in practice Wednesday. He had an MRI and everything came back OK. He's resting and said he expects to be good to go when summer conditioning starts June 6.
Some other stuff:
- Redshirt freshman Ryan Boyle has shifted to WR. Kirk Ferentz said it's not necessarily permanent, but Boyle wants to play and this is the route to go with Beathard and Tyler Wiegers having locked down the top two QB spots.

- Don't judge Wiegers too harshly with the two picks. Sophomore Lucas LeGrand filled in for junior Sean Welsh at center. Sophomore Keegan Render also sat out Saturday with an undisclosed injury. He filled in for James Daniels, who is out this spring after knee surgery. Walk-on Dalton Ferguson filled Render's spot. So, spring Iowa was down to the No. 2 center and No. 3 guard.
It was a makeshift O-line. On the pick six, Wiegers had to field a dribbled shotgun snap and threw a ball up for grabs.
This isn't total absolution for Wiegers. It's tough to know what the pocket is in a spring game, when a sack is tagging the QB. He stared down receivers a few times and had a few balls batted down at the line of scrimmage. The interception that Desmond King snared was a little late and doomed from when it left Wiegers' hand.
- Small look, yes, but I thought LeShun Daniels looked good. Caught a pass, ran with burst . . .
- . . . But if this were a gameday, defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson would've been Big Ten defensive player of the week.
- I liked Ryan Boyle the wide receiver. He's a take-charge kind of athlete. Very confident. Caught the ball well today. This can work, but let's give it more than three practices to jump to any sort of conclusion.
- I asked Kirk Ferentz about TE Jameer Outsey. I wondered where he's gone. He played on the second unit Saturday. Remember, he started one game last season.
Here's the answer:
Q. And he played a lot last year?
COACH FERENTZ: Right now, the way I would characterize that, we have George Kittle, who is clearly our starter. We're hoping the way Henry played last year, we are hoping George is right in that slot. They are a little different skill set but both were really good football players.
So he's clearly our best tight end right now and I would say it's kind of a three-horse race at the next tier and then we have a couple younger guys that are hopefully going to enter into that derby in the summertime.
Right now it's all pretty even and just let that play out just like a lot of other positions. It's going to be a real dynamic process throughout August. I anticipate that, some positions. It's going to be tough to beat Josey Jewell out I think, but some other spots, there's going to be a lot of competition.
I bring up No. 2 TE because I liked walk-on Peter Pekar. He looked fluid and ready to contribute. Jon Wisnieski continues to make strides. The incoming freshmen Ferentz mentioned are Noah Fant and T.J. Hockenson.
So, it looks like the ball is in Outsey's court.
- Drew Cook had his best day in front of a crowd on the Kinnick turf. He's really improved how he sees the game.
- Iowa's defense blitzed a lot. Could this be sort of like 2013, when the LB corps of Christian Kirksey, Anthony Hitchens and James Morris was activated in pressure? I think it could very well be. You know about Josey Jewell. I think Ben Niemann is terrific, too. Between Aaron Mends, Bo Bower and Jack Hockaday, Iowa is going to find a good player at WLB.
- That said, I thought the DEs were terrific Saturday. Parker Hesse was strong vs. the run. Matt Nelson won a few battles and should've been credited with two sacks.
- Akrum Wadley will get the ball in space this season. What would be a good number of receptions for an RB? Don't worry about numbers. It's one of those things that has to happen.
OK, stats and lineups.
