Hawkeye Downs wraps up 2012 season

The 2012 weekly racing season came to a close Friday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.

When the final checkered flag dropped, only one driver repeated as a season champion. Matt Petrzelkawon his second points title in the hobby stock division, while Thor Anderson, Brian Gibson and Shane

Hanson won their first track titles.

Anderson, of Bondurant, claimed the late model division title. Gibson, a veteran of the track, won the modified class. Hanson captured his first hornets crown, breaking a tie for the lead with Kurt Bohnsack on the final race night.

A pair of familiar race car drivers also won championships. Dave McCalla finished his dominance of the sportsman division after a year away from the asphalt track to race on dirt surfaces. McCalla has won multiple sportsman titles at Hawkeye Downs in the past. Kevin Korsmo, a member of the Hawkeye Downs Wall of Fame, won the legends division.
