Aug. 23, 2012 7:11 pm
The weekly points series at Hawkeye Downs Speedway comes to a close this week as the asphalt track holds its Season Points Championship night Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The event will consist of heat and feature races in late model, modified, sportsman, legends, hobby stock and hornet cars. Gates open at 6 p.m. with hot laps at 6:35 and pre-race ceremonies at 7:15.
In addition to regualr heat and feature contests, hobby stock drivers will compete in the trophy dash race, featuring drivers from that division who have yet to win an event this season.

The hornet division is the most competitive, heading into the final night of races. Kurt Bohnsack and Shane Hanson are tied for the season points lead. Bohnsack, the 2008 season points champion and 2009 runner-up by a single point in stock cars, has four feature wins to Hanson's three.
According to the Hawkeye Downs website, Kevin Korsmo and Thor Anderson don't have the titles locked up in legends and late model divisions, respectively. Both have to start the feature to secure their titles. Korsmo, a former track champion and Hawkeye Downs Wall of Fame member, leads Dennis Diercks by 32 points. Anderson's six feature wins this year has given him a 42-point lead over defending points champ Brad Osborn. Anderson is looking for his first track championship.
Brian Gibson has a 36-point lead over Ryan Luedtke in the modified division. Gibson is on the verge of his first season track title and should capture it with a feature start Friday night. Dave McCalla, a former track champ, returned to Hawkeye Downs after a year away to race dirt. He has dominated the sportsman division, winning a all-class high 11 features. McCalla has the title locked up, leading Greg Hentrich by 111 points.
Matt Petrzelka appears to be the only driver in line to repeat as a season points champion. Petrzelka, who won his first last season, leads Brad Chandler by 72 points in the hobby stock division. Petrzelka has nine feature wins compeared to four by Chandler.
