Aug. 14, 2012 1:02 pm
The auto racing season at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids is coming to a close. The weekly racing series has two events left on its schedule, even though the track notes new events can be added at anytime.
All six divisions - late model, modified, sportsman, hornets, legends and hobby stock - will compete for season points. The "Trophy Dash," including drivers who have not won a heat or feature race during this season, will feature legends car drivers. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:35 p.m. with pre-race ceremonies at 7:15. Heat races and the "Trophy Dash" begin at 7:30 followed by feature contests.
Last week, Andy Edwards (late model), Illinois teenager Jake Griffin (modified), Dave McCalla (sportsman), Brad Chandler (hornet), Kevin Korsmo (legend) and Matt Petrzelka (hobby stock).

McCalla, Korsmo and Petrzelka increased their season points lead and pretty much have it locked up, if they haven't yet. Thor Anderson owns a 31-point lead over defending late model season points champ Brad Osborn. In the modified division, Brian Gibson leads Ryan Luedtke by 34 points. Anderson and Gibson are looking for their first track championships at Hawkeye Downs.
Shane Hanson has a 16-point lead over Kurt Bohnsack in hornet class.
The track is also promoting August as "Motorsports Awareness Month." The emphasis is on bringing a a friend to an auto race.
