David Montgomery ready to go for Iowa State’s regular-season finale at Kansas State

AMES – Iowa State running back David Montgomery was injured in the fourth quarter of a 23-13 win at Baylor on Saturday. He didn't put any weight on his left leg as he came off the field.

Coach Matt Campbell gave a five-word update on Montgomery's status for Iowa State's game against Kansas State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

'He'll be ready to roll,' Campbell said.

Montgomery said that when it happened, it was a pain he'd never felt before so he panicked. But he just told himself to calm down and once he did, he knew he'd be fine.

'I feel great, actually,' Montgomery said. 'I feel really good. I just have to make sure I get treatment this week and make sure I'm cautious in practice this week. I'll be ready to go on Saturday.'

Depth chart update

Iowa State's depth chart has a few changes on it this week. Offensive tackle Bryce Meeker reappeared on it after being left off due to injury and running back Sheldon Croney also made an appearance as a backup with Mike Warren.

Meeker made the trip down to Waco, Texas, but Campbell said that was mostly in case of an emergency.

'We'll see where he's at progress wise and see if he's ready to be truly in it this week,' Campbell said. 'Bryce has done a great job and worked really hard to get himself back.'

Croney has been getting spot touches the last few weeks when Montgomery leaves the game. Warren has been nowhere to be found.

'Mike's trying to get healthy, he's kind of been dinged up a couple of times through practice the last couple of weeks,' Campbell said. 'Sheldon's been healthy and Sheldon took advantage of those reps. You watch him play in that game and he blocks, he catches and some of those runs he had in the game it was really impressive and really fun to watch Sheldon Croney take the next step.'

Lastly, Kyle Kempt is still listed as the starting quarterback and Zeb Noland is still listed as the backup, but that spot is still up in the air. It'll depend on how healthy Kempt is.

Noland started against Baylor and went 14 of 28 for 180 yards and two touchdowns.

Weekly awards

Cornerback Brian Peavy and kicker Garrett Owens were named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively. Allen Lazard was invited to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Owens went 3-for-3 on field goals during the Baylor game, including a 45-yarder into the wind.

'I think the greatest thing is not what he proved to me, but what he proved to himself,' Campbell said. 'And what he proved to himself is he has big-time ability and he's got the ability to consistently get better, and that's what he's done. Some of those kicks that he's made, in some of the biggest moments, it's huge. That 45-yarder into the wind, that allowed the game to be a two-possession game, was huge. I'm really glad he decided to come here.'

Peavy led Iowa State with 10 tackles on Saturday, a pass breakup in the end zone and a strip and fumble recovery at the 3-yard line.

'He tackled the guy, and then he stripped the ball,' Campbell said. 'The play is a phenomenal football play, probably one of the best plays we've had all season. Instantly my mind went back to that kid and his work ethic and what he does. Brian works really hard at it, he's in here all the time, he watches film all the time, he's always played the game with a chip on his shoulder even though he's got a big smile and presents a really charismatic young man, but in there is a chip on his shoulder.'
