The second Iowa men’s basketball player who went through Senior Day ceremonies last month is coming back for another season as a Hawkeye.
Guard Austin Ash of Cedar Rapids and Mount Vernon High School has been put on scholarship by Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery and will remain a teammate of sixth-year senior Jordan Bohannon of Marion.
Ash had entered the NCAA’s transfer portal with the intention of looking at playing at a smaller Division I program. A few weeks ago, Ash didn’t know what his basketball future would hold.
“My first reaction was a little shocking,” Ash told Hawkeye Report’s Tom Kakert Thursday. “This is something that I had been working toward ever since I can remember.
“I'm really excited. Had taken a couple visits and really thought that I had played my last game in a Hawkeye uniform after that Oregon game. Very grateful for at least one more year here.”
Ash played in nine games in the 2021-22 season, averaging 1.7 points. He has been credited by his coach and teammates as being a valued member of the team.
