All-MVC girls’ soccer 2022: Xavier’s Brielle Bastian, Linn-Mar’s Sofia Bush named players of the year

Linn-Mar junior Sofia Bush and Cedar Rapids Xavier senior Brielle Bastian were honored as girls’ soccer athletes of the year Monday by the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Bush earned the Mississippi Division award after scoring 26 goals and contributing 15 assists for a Lions team that went 16-3 and won the division title with a 7-0 record.

Bastian led the Valley Division champion and Class 2A state semifinalist Saints (13-4, 6-0) with 37 goals while assisting on 13 others.

Iowa City Liberty senior Sam Harvey (Mississippi Division) and Cedar Rapids Jefferson sophomore Madi Mercil (Valley Division) earned the MVC’s goalkeeper of the year honors.

MVC coaches of the year are Alex Pace of Cedar Falls (Mississippi) and Shalyn Larson and John O’Connor of Jefferson (Valley). The J-Hawks went 3-8 with a roster comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores.
