DES MOINES - An essential component to a decade-long stretch of soccer dominance is roster replenishment.
The Iowa City Regina boys' soccer team continues to possess impact freshman.
Regina freshman Alec Wick scored two goals in the first 21 minutes of a 3-0 victory for No. 1 Iowa City Regina against Treynor in a Class 1A state quarterfinal Thursday at Cownie Soccer Park.
'Mason (Welter) had a great shot on the second one, I just followed it up,” Wick said. 'It was a great shot. The first one, it was a good ball in and then I just passed it into the back of the net.”
Wick is second on the team with 13 goals this season, including eight in his last five games. At 6-foot tall, Wick is an imposing figure for his age on the soccer field. He credits his recent scoring hot streak to his teammates, including his cousin Nick Pechous, who assisted on Wick's second goal in the 21st minute.
'Our team chemistry helps,” Wick said. 'We know each other's games. We just know how to play. … It helps with my cousin playing me balls. Everybody plays dimes.”
Wick was the second-leading receiver for the state runner-up Regina football team last season with 29 receptions for 347 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, he posted 17.5 tackles but missed the state championship game due to a concussion.
'He's really a terrific young man,” Regina Coach Rick Larew said. 'He's just one of the most coachable kids. He's obviously a gifted athlete. Great family, great kid. Good in all sports. He can just do some things out here that you can't coach. He's just that good.”
Pechous capped what has become known as the 'Nick and Wick Show” with his team-high 16th goal of the season in the 58th minute.
Regina (16-3) - a state-tournament qualifier for the 11th year in a row and winner of six of the last nine state titles - is in the state semifinals for the 10th time in 11 years.
The Regals will play fourth-seeded Gilbert (15-7) Friday at noon.
'We play like we practice,” Larew said. 'We practice hard every day. This last week I had to call them off because they were still going so hard at each other like we do all year long. … The guys practice hard, they play hard. Our games are pretty much an extension of our practice.”
