New baking contest planned for June

CEDAR RAPIDS — Sandrine Wallace, a local French baker known for her macarons, is starting a new baking contest this summer at NewBo City Market.
The first Cedar Rapids & French Pastry by Sandrine Bake Off Show is accepting applications for its debut June 9 and 10, with six sessions of 3.5 hours each in the culinary kitchen in NewBo City Market, 1100 Third St. SE.
Each session will feature five bakers, bringing a total of 30 non-professional bakers vying to present the best “stunning summer cake.” Bakers must be at least 18 years old, and can compete alone or in a team.

A judges panel of renowned local food business owners will review cakes each day, and award prizes ranging from $50 to $300 on a June 10 reveal at 6 p.m. Slices of the competition cakes will be available for sale after winners are announced.
Entry fees are $50 per baker or team. Most ingredients and equipment will be provided.
