Cedar Rapids’ investment in flood control may be larger than expected. Why? Inflation and spikes in construction costs. The city’s plan to install flood gates, levees and pump stations is estimated to cost $750 million over 20 years. Now, the city will reassess that cost in light of the current inflation rate. Next, Swisher Special Election results: Swisher voters decided not to establish a public water system. 84.2% of voters decided to continue to source water from private wells and the seven current public water systems. Swisher’s Jefferson-Monroe Fire Department is the only fire department in Johnson County without a public water system. Swisher Mayor Chris Taylor previously told The Gazette that issues that prompted the special election, like improving fire response and addressing contaminated water still need solutions. Grab a beer to support homeless services in Cedar Rapids! Willis Dady Homeless Services will host their annual Hops for Housing event May 6. The event is at the Veterans Memorial Building from 2:30-5:30. The event features regional brewers who will offer over 100 craft brews. Tickets purchased in advance from the Johnson Avenue Hy-Vee will give exclusive access to a VIP hour with brewers, sponsors, and Willis Dady staff and board members. General admission is $35.
