It’s been a long winter and a long year, so watching life spring forth from trees around the neighborhood has been especially joyful this year. They seem to be saying “We survived a derecho and a pandemic, so you can, too!” Magnolias — like the ones pictured here — are some of my favorites, a preference I likely got from my mom, who has always insisted on having a magnolia tree or bush around the house. They’re odd but beautiful to behold. Fossilized magnolias have been dated to the Cretaceous Period, about 100 million years ago. They’re resilient plants, and just like us, will regroup and bloom on for many years into the future.
