William Chine "Bill" Stodola, 91, a lifelong Cedar Rapids resident, passed away in the evening of Aug. 17, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in
Des Moines, Iowa, following
a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held on
Aug. 24, 2018, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Stateroom from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
William was born on July 7, 1927, the son of Wencil and Albia (Anderle) Stodola in Cedar Rapids. In 1944, at age 17, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Following an honorable discharge in 1946, Bill returned to Cedar Rapids to finish high school, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1947. Bill played football and lettered two years in baseball; he also played American Legion baseball.
On Aug. 28, 1950, William was married to Patricia Leon Hughes and they were blessed with two children, Michael and Terri. They were married nearly 67 years until Patricia's death in 2017.
Bill was a longtime Cedar Rapids Gazette employee, with a career spanning more than 44 years. He retired from his position as manager of the pressroom in 1992. Bill had many interests — he received his private pilot's license and he enjoyed time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed travel, the outdoors in general, and fishing and hunting in particular.
Survivors include a son, Michael (Kathleen) Stodola; four grandsons, Luke Poeschl, Eric Stodola, Scot Stodola and Marc Stodola; a brother-in-law, John Robert Hughes; and a son-in-law, Scott Nicol. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia; and his daughter, Terri Nicol.
