Thomas was born Dec. 23, 1955, in Iowa City, the son of Russell and Dolores (Kofron) Slade. He graduated from West High School in Iowa City. Tom was an owner of Slade Brothers Roofing in Coralville, and later a private contractor. Tom, an avid outdoorsman, spent his summers fishing Pelican Lake in Minnesota.
