Thomas Meade, 88, of Stone City, died Saturday, March 23, 2019, in Coralville. Thomas was born July 4, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, to Clement and Hattie (Ockenfels) Meade. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, 4200 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, with a vigil being held at 4 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, at St. Isidore the Farmer Catholic Church in Springville, Iowa. Family will meet guests one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Thomas is survived by his children, Patrick (Dawn McElmeel) Meade, Renee (James) Trotter and Michelle (Randel) Dopp; grandchildren, Adam Trotter, Danielle Trotter, Nathan Dopp and Olivia Dopp; and brother, Lorin (Rosemary) Meade.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margarete; and son, Steve.
Thomas was a graduate of Franklin High School. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 in the Korean conflict. During his service, he tested missiles for the military. After his service was completed, he obtained both his bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Iowa. Thomas was united in marriage to Margarete Hartelt on Sept. 17, 1957, at Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar Rapids. Thomas was a teacher at Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, eventually becoming a professor/counselor at Kirkwood Community College.
Thomas was very involved with St. Isidore the Farmer Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed gardening, wine making, and had a love of the outdoors and enjoyed his daily walks up until he became ill. Thomas was a humanitarian, giving of himself and to his favorite charities.
