Steven Jay Shipp

Cedar Rapids

Steven J. Shipp, 70, of Sparks, Md., passed away on April 15, 2018, at Gilchrist Hospice Towson after a battle with cancer.
Steve was born on Feb. 25, 1948, in Des Moines and was raised in Cedar Rapids. Steve married Pam Karasek, also of Cedar Rapids, on May 20, 1972. He obtained his undergraduate degree in architecture from Iowa State University in 1972, then worked in London for two years as an architect. When the couple returned to the U.S., Steve earned master degrees in 1976 from the University of Pennsylvania in both architecture and urban planning/design. Over the years, he worked with RTKL Associates as well as several regional development firms. Steve's lifelong creative passions extended to the fine aesthetic elements he laboriously incorporated into his homes, the lush gardens surrounding them and his collection of unique and eclectic works of art and furniture from American designers.
Steve is survived by his wife, Pam; his Uncle Ed Warren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and friends who are forever grateful for having shared his life. He was especially close with his brother-in-law, Larry Toll (Suzanne), and cousins Michael Warren (Laura) and Terry Warren (Detra), with whom he enjoyed many travel adventures.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Stan; and his sister, Connie.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Des Moines. Memorials may be made to Iowa State University, School of Design, Department of Architecture, or to Gilchrist Hospice Towson MD.
