Ruthanna Franey, 95, a 50-plus-year resident of Cedar Rapids, died Aug. 11, 2018, in La Quinta, Calif. Lovingly called Thanna by her many friends and family, she was born in Hays, Kan., on May 22, 1923, the only child of William D. and Ruth Benning Weidlein. Growing up in Minnesota, Carleton College and the University of Minnesota served as a springboard for embracing a full life of many facets and interests. She married William Franey in 1958 and they were together until his death in 2010.
As a member of the Junior League, Thanna found an opportunity for involvement in community projects. Among many talents was her skill at knitting and mentoring family and friends who wanted to try it. With her husband, Dr. William Franey (family M.D.), they were the original district commissioners of the Timber Pony Club, United States Pony Club. She served as national examiner for the U.S. Pony Club. The Franeys participated in various equestrian activities and events such as the Cedar Rapids Charity Horse Show.
Ruthanna is survived by her daughter, Becky Ross of Palm Desert, Calif.; sons, John (Diana) Ross of Cedar Rapids and Bill (Annette) Ross of Palo Alto, Calif.; grandchildren, Capt. Arron Franey of Ft. Lee, Va., Andrew (Jodee) Ross of Cedar Rapids and Natalie Ross (Andrew Donovan) of Seattle, Wash.; two great-grandchildren; former brother-in-law, George Ross of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Franey; and her stepsons, William and Robert Franey.
A private memorial will be held in the fall.
