He attended St. Patrick's High School before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. He was employed at the University of Iowa Physical Plant for 41 years, retiring in 1988 as the paint and glass shop manager.
He loved gardening, bowling, reading, golfing and traveling with his wife, Shirley. Above all, Richard loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and was considered a diehard fan. He also was a member of the VFW of Iowa City.
Richard is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Janice (James) Barnes, Teresa (Merrill) Hamilton, Kevin Callahan and David Callahan; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jack, James and Donald Callahan; and one sister, Bonnie Denninger.
We especially wish to express our gratitude to all of our friends at the Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County who lovingly cared for our family.
