Paul A. Carney


Paul A. Carney of Coggon, Iowa, died on Aug. 5, 2018.
An avid fly-fisherman,
Paul loved the history of the American West, the trout streams of Wyoming, golfing and the Green Bay Packers.
He was born along with
his twin sister, Patricia, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on
Feb. 1, 1931, to Harry and
Ann Carney. Paul graduated from Roosevelt High School
in Cedar Rapids, where he
was a two-time varsity letterman in football and basketball. Following graduation, Paul volunteered for the U.S. Navy, where he served in naval aviation during the Korean War. Upon returning to Iowa after his enlistment, Paul attended Iowa State Teachers College where he played football and graduated in 1957. While attending ISTC, he met the love of his life, Oma Jane Greiner. They married on Aug. 6, 1957, and moved to Coggon, where he began his teaching and coaching career. He led the Coggon Rockets to winning seasons in several sports. Paul continued his career as a teacher and head football coach at Linn-Mar High School in Marion, Iowa. Paul was admired by his students and players as someone who expected dedication and hard work in the classroom and on the playing field. In addition to earning a master's degree in physical education from the University of Iowa, Paul later earned a master's in administration at UNI and became the principal of North Linn Junior High School in 1973. He later became North Linn's high school principal and served in this position until his retirement in 1992.
Paul leaves behind five children and 12 grandchildren: The Honorable Christopher Paul (Jennifer), Clayton Patrick (Lynn), Cameron Philip (Maggie), Dr. Caroline Patricia (Nick), Clinton Parker (Sara); and grandchildren, Ryne, Sean, Seth, Keeley, Brett, Nathaniel, Ethan, Gabriella, Katerina, Cormac, Bronwyn and Gwyneth.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clement and John; twin sister, Patricia; and his beloved wife, Oma Jane, in 2016.
The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City. He will be placed in rest next to Jane on Aug. 16, 2018, at 12:30 p.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Coggon. Military honors will be provided by Coggon American Legion Post 362.
