Michael was a deeply spiritual person. He was raised Catholic in Mason City and began his journey of faith at St. Joseph's Preparatory Seminary Holy Trinity in Alabama. He was a graduate of Holy Family High School in Mason City and maintained contact with many of his classmates throughout his life, most notably in his very active social media life on Facebook. He was in the congregations and choirs of several churches throughout his five decades in the Cedar Rapids area including, St. Matthew's, St. Joseph's (Marion) and finally St. Pius X Catholic Church.
Michael wore many hats over his lifetime, far too many to list. But anyone who knew Michael knew of his incredible talent and love of theater, film, photography, music, writing and all things entertaining and artistic.
It was Michael's radiant personality that provided a vibrant sales career. Michael sold everything from insurance, to cars, to waterbeds, over his lifetime. Some of Michael's career highlights include his time at Breeze Oil North Station (Mason City) and in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Manufacturing, Camelot Talent and Modeling Agency, his radio DJ career at 98.1 KHAK and his final job before retirement, MCI/Verizon Business conferencing.
There was no limit to Michael's pride in his children, his art and all whom he loved. He loved deeply and aggressively, in fact, in his later years he was lovingly referred to as "The Ole' Bear." His empathetic ear was extended to anyone in need and he was always there to celebrate and encourage those following their dreams.
As per his wishes, Michael's body has been cremated by Cremation Simplicity by Stewart Baxter. The family has made the decision to host a celebration of life in the spring, to accommodate Michael's vast number of friends, family and loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions in Michael's memory may be directed to the family at: Kelly Family, 95 E. Cemetery Rd., Fairfax, IA 52228.
