Mary E. Ament, 93, passed away Monday, Oct. 16, 2017,
at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, after a
brief illness. Many family members and friends stopped by to share their love and say a prayer during her final
days and others connected through calls and texts.
Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, by the Rev. Wayne Droessler. Friends may visit with the family on Friday at the church after 9:30 a.m. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Mary was born Sept. 25, 1924, to Josephine (Rose) and Nicholas Schinker. She was raised in Norway, Iowa, with her seven brothers. She shared many wonderful memories with us about her younger years and time spent with her many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mary married Donald L. Ament in Norway at St. Michael's Church in 1943. They lived most of their married life in Cedar Rapids and had four children: Sandra (John) Drew of Anaheim Hills, Calif., Bonnie (Larry) Calvert of Fort Dodge, Nicholas (Elyse) Ament of Cedar Rapids and Donald C. Ament, whose death in 2010 weighed heavily on her heart.
Mary worked at Turner Microphone for 25 years, volunteered and spent time caring for her family. She enjoyed playing cards with the Canasta Club ladies, her family and friends. Mary and Don enjoyed traveling, dancing, listening to Lawrence Welk and golfing. She was a great cook and often invited family and friends for dinner. Most of all, Mary loved spending time with her children and their families, and had a special way of expressing her genuine love and care for everyone.
Along with her three surviving children, she also will be greatly missed by her brother and sister-in-law, Wilfred and Darlene Schinker of Norway; 12 grandchildren, Tina (Drew) DeShano, Andrea (Drew) Ganahl, David and Darren Drew, Amy (Calvert) Baker, Crista (Calvert) Grant, Josh Calvert, Brad Ament, Emily (Ament) Wartsbaugh, Jill (Ament) Nassif, Daniel and Jordan Ament; and 21 great-grandchildren, Lauren D., Trevor, Brianna, Sarah, J.P., Drew G., Dillon, Garrett, Ryan, Taylor, Josie, Lauren G., Morganne, Reid, Drew A., Addison, Jackson, Evan, Kai, Eden and Willow; and many friends and special neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; son, Donald C.; her parents; six brothers; and many other beloved family members and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy or to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
