Marlis Windus

Cedar Rapids

Marlis Virginia Windus (East), 93, of Duluth, Minn., passed away Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, at Marywood Assisted Living.
Marlis was born Sept. 4, 1924, in Lake Benton, Minn., and moved to Duluth at a young age. She attended and graduated from Denfeld High School, the University of Minnesota and the New England Music Conservatory. Marlis was an accomplished violinist and longtime member of the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Symphony, where she played for over 50 years. She had a profound influence on many young musicians in the Cedar Rapids community through her teaching, both publicly and privately.
Marlis loved to travel with family and friends and pursue her creative passions, such as photography, gardening, crafts and painting. She was a member of PEO, AAUW, the Beethoven Club and Sons of Norway of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Albert Windus.
Marlis is survived by son, David (Debbie) Windus of St. Louis, Mo.; daughter, Joan (Jim) Halquist of Duluth, Minn.; two grandchildren, Peter (Katie Asher) Halquist of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Jonathan Halquist of Minneapolis.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Marywood for the care they provided Marlis during her stay.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Benedictine Chapel, 935 Kenwood Ave., Duluth, Minn. A gathering with refreshments will immediately follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Beethoven Club Music Awards or Orchestra Iowa, formerly known as the Cedar Rapids Symphony.
