Mae Wilhelmi


Mae (Alpers) Wilhelmi, 87, of Atkins died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018, at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins with the Rev. Douglas Woltemath officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, also at the church. Interment will be held at a later date at St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Mae Alpers was born on May 27, 1931, in Vinton to Henry and Mabel (McIntyre) Alpers. Mae graduated from Lincoln High School with the Class of 1950. She was united in marriage to Donald Wilhelmi on July 22, 1951, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton. She worked as a baker at Benton Community School District, Atkins Center, from 1973 to 1993.
Mae was a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins. She loved to play Bingo and enjoyed attending senior dining in Vinton for many years. The couple wintered in Arizona for 20 years, which she very much enjoyed.
Mae is survived by her husband, Donald of Atkins; four children, Terry Wilhelmi of Thompson, Debra (Jeffrey) Thill of Britt, Kristi Wilhelmi of Atkins and Steven (Kim) Wilhelmi of Spokane, Wash.; one grandson, Conor Thill of Atkins; her sister, Jo (Orville) Schrage of Vinton; her brother, Russell Alpers of Vinton; and a sister-in-law, Carol Edwards of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Roy, Lester, Harold and Stanley Alpers; and three sisters, Lucille Cole, Ruth Lyons and Mildred Fowler.
